Climate leaders from around the world gathered at TIME’s COP29 Impact Dinner in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Nov. 13 for a celebration of the [TIME100 Climate](https://time.com/collection/time100-climate-2024/) leadership list. Nations are currently attending the annual U.N. COP29 climate summit in order to continue pushing the world to meet its goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C, including working to unlock the necessary tools and financing to achieve progress.

“No one of us is going to solve this challenge alone, and we need leadership in all of its forms if we're going to have a chance at accelerating climate action and climate progress,” said Shyla Raghav, TIME’s Chief Climate Officer, who began the evening by speaking about the importance of celebrating and elevating different forms of leadership when it comes to climate action.

The TIME100 Climate list [celebrates](https://time.com/7160877/how-we-chose-time100-climate-2024/) decision makers, executives, researchers, and innovators shaping business and climate action. TIME’s Senior Correspondent, Justin Worland highlighted the accomplishments of some of the list’s honorees, from [Vanessa Chan](https://time.com/7172481/vanessa-chan/), chief commercialization officer for the U.S. Department of Energy, to [Susana Muhamad](https://time.com/7172558/susana-muhamad/), Colombia’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development. And several of the listees were present at the dinner.

This includes [Damilola Ogunbiyi](https://time.com/7172533/damilola-ogunbiyi/), CEO and special representative of the U.N. secretary-general for Sustainable Energy for All, and co-chair of U.N. Energy who discussed inequality in clean energy, highlighting the fact that [only 1.6%](https://www.president.go.ke/invest-in-africas-renewable-energy-president-ruto-to-global-north-investors/) of clean energy investments went to Africa last year. “You can't do \[the\] energy transition in the Global North and leave the Global South behind,” she said.

[Majid Al Suwaidi](https://time.com/7172423/majid-al-suwaidi/), CEO of Altérra and another individual on the TIME100 Climate list this year, meanwhile argued that, while the climate crisis might seem insurmountable, there has never been a more critical moment for climate optimism. “2024 has been a year of big political changes and geopolitical tension, and there's been a growing mood of apprehension across the climate world. But if I'm being frank, this is not the time to be pessimistic or to throw up our hands and say we're all doomed,” he said. “In fact, I believe this is the moment we rise up and lean into hope, because despair is the enemy of climate action, because hope is a powerful motivator for action, and because we really do have reasons to be optimistic.”

Later in the evening, Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO of Acumen, spoke about the importance of “celebrating heroes that are too often unsung,” explaining the impact an entrepreneur’s solar technology had on village women.

[Tzeporah Berman](https://time.com/7172519/tzeporah-berman/), founder of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and included on this year’s TIME100 Climate list, spoke about the necessity of placing oil, gas, and coal—which make up [86% of global emissions](https://www.unep.org/interactives/emissions-gap-report/2023/#section-8)—at the center of conversations on climate change. “We need to build hope through our actions, through these difficult and honest conversations that lead to bold new ideas that can chart a new course. Some say to me that an idea of a fossil fuel treaty that could be a companion to the Paris Agreement, a whole new treaty, it's too big. It's too new. It's too bold. But we know here in this room… we can't afford more of the same.”

Muhamad ended the night’s speeches by urging for more global investment in the fight to stop deforestation. “The critical question is, where are the finances to sustain results that bring climate action?” Muhamad said. “Saving the Amazon is not a problem only of the governments that are there. It is one of the pillars of climate stability, and we have proven that we can be successful in the work. But in order to sustain that work, we need to shift economic rules, and we need to shift the access to finance from the Global South.”

_TIME100 Impact Dinner: Leaders Creating Climate Action_ _was presented by Fortescue and MOL._

## Transcript

I think it's fair to say to be frank and say that we're in a difficult moment right now. There are a lot of setbacks, rancorous policy debates that have caused conflict. I'm thinking of the extreme weather that has cost lives, destroyed communities. There's a lot of things that we can feel right here at Cop 29. But the good thing is I don't have to look very far for inspiration. I'm thinking, of course, of people like the people in this room. So, you know, I get a lot of questions like, Why is Africa like this? Why is the Global South like that? Because people are not investing in it, and they're not investing in people.

I would love if somebody has 6.2 billion to give the African continent, but globally what in clean energy investments last year, 1.6% went to Africa in four deals. Right? That's what we're dealing with. You can't do energy transition in the global North and leave the Global South behind. That's not how it works. This is not the time to be pessimistic or to throw up our hands and say, we're all doomed. In fact, I believe this is the moment we rise up and lean into hope because despair is the enemy of climate action. I've seen how climate finance is moving and trying to move into the mainstream of the global financial system.

I've seen an incredible amount of partnership and creativity to unlock climate opportunity and wealth. So meaningful for me as someone who has been investing in extraordinary entrepreneurs around the world. We have over 200 companies. They've served 650 million people, and I promise you you wouldn't recognize the names of almost any of them. And so to see those kinds of entrepreneurs honored by time is not only game changing for those entrepreneurs, but for all of the many different players who've been part of their success. Real success is this idea that maybe somebody on the other side of the world we might never know or ever meet says, thank you for the work that you've done.

The fact that fossil fuels have been dragged center stage over the last two years into the climate policy debates and climate negotiations, I do see that as hopeful. The fossil fuel industry has spent decades trying to make their products invisible and trying to make us feel guilty for using them. This is about demand, I was told, as I was mansplained markets and emissions many times over. This is not about supply. Climate policy is about demand. We have to increase the price of carbon. We have to reduce the demand, and the markets will magically constrain supply, but it's not working, and it's certainly not working fast enough to keep us safe.

We learned so much from the people, victims of conflict that we're ready to step up to the challenge. President Petro decided to put $200 million from the national budget to this program every year for 20 years. And we were able in just two years to reverse, compared to 2021, 60% of the trajectory of deforestation. And we were able to have the lowest number of deforestation in 23 years since we have record. We have proven that we can be successful in the work. But in order to sustain that work, we need to shift economic rules, and we need to shift the access to finance from the Global South. It seems to be today that the economies that put more CO two in the atmosphere are the ones that have better access to capital.

Those people in the frontlines of climate change and on the ecosystems that sustain us all do not have the direct support from the system. I'll just leave you with three closing reflections. The first, especially for those of us in the United States, everything that we've seen here today transcends political cycles. Second, we heard a diversity of opinions and thoughts and solutions here today. Let's try to find cause for unification among our movement. Oftentimes we fall into the trap of feeling competitive. Let's not pit ourselves against each other. And last, let's find ways to support all of our time 100 climate honorees to go further and faster.

Let's build a movement around each and every one of you. Thank you for being here.
